The work is a free standing kinetic work comprising of motors, very strong neodymium magnets, a large mirror, iron filings and colour pigment.
The configuration of forces - attraction & repulsion create a living landscape which changes over time. The work evokes the sense of a living, invisible system, one that gives and takes, highlighting the convergence and expansion of energy. It is a metaphor for life.
The work is set off by a motor under the mirror with a series of opposing magnets embedded on a rotating disk. As the motor spins, the magnetic fields cross over each other to create energetic energy fields within the filings. The configuration is set so some magnets take filings from one field of energy, and then another pathway takes filings from its neighbouring field & vice versa- a kind of constant evolution. The colour plays an important role as each circle of colour gives and takes from each other which over time creates new hues of colour and a completely different configuration within the filings. A time based, evolving work. As a concept the work is a mirror of human nature both on a human energetic level as well as representing the cyclical pattern in nature and within the cosmos. It portrays an invisible realm, an energy field that is in constant flux around us, this is a portrayal of energy manifested into reality.
